Bryn Oh: Last days of Singularity of Kumiko

Artist Bryn Oh is about to create something new, but you still have a few days left to view current exhibition:

Now that I have completed the machinima for The Singularity of Kumiko it is time to take it down and begin work on something new.  For those of you interested in stats and juxtaposing a real life gallery exhibit vs a virtual world one then here are a few things related to this one.  In my first life a gallery exhibit of my paintings would have an opening night reception of approximately 300 people and then would run a month with visitors each day dropping to around 30-40 at the start of the month to probably 20 by the end.  I am going to be generous and say perhaps 1500 people will visit a first life gallery exhibit of my paintings over the course of a month.  I would get one or possible two such exhibits a year and the majority of people who are exposed to my work this way are local to Toronto.

Ziki Questi’s Blog: Forest of Scissors

Igor Ballyhoo’s venerable Forest of Scissors has been temporarily reconstructed at LEA7. This immersive and gigantic field of sharp objects is a delight to photograph and explore, although both my partner Kinn and I were oddly pushed off the platform repeatedly. (Try flying above or below if that happens.) As new material is in development elsewhere on the sim, which is owned by Rose Borchovski for an LEA grant, the Forest of Scissors may disappear soon. Thanks to the astute observation of friend and photographer Anita Witt for the alert.

Preiddeu Annwn: immersive education in Second Life | Inara Pey: Living in a Modem World

Preiddeu Annwn (or Preiddeu Annwfn, “The Spoils of Annwfn“), is one of the most famous gnomic / philosophical poems to be found in the Middle Welsh Book of Taliesin. In just eight irregularly versed stanzas, it records a journey the poet (possibly intended to be the 6th Century poet Taliesin, although the poem itself dates from around the 14th Century), made with King Arthur to the Otherworld (the Annwfn of the title)  – a place of eternal youth and delights, which is common to Welsh mythology (appearing in, for example, the Four Branches of the Mabinogi). It is also now the subject of an immersive environment itself entitled Preiddeu Annwn, designed by Hypatia Pickens, a professor of English at the University of Rochester,  New York, and her students. It’s function is to provide an interactive means by which the poem and its themes can be explored and better understood, both within itself and with regards to broader medieval Welsh mythology and medieval literature. It is also an extraordinary piece of scholarly art.

Rebranding of Windlight!

It has been an incredible first year at Windlight Magazine! We have grown beyond leaps and bounds and have covered so many areas of the arts!

Throughout the past year our scope and mission has grown to encompass the various art forms: music, fashion, literature and more! To reflect the change in our scope and mission, we have decided to rebrand as we are also looking outwards towards artistic horizons beyond Second Life and into real life.

When I created Windlight last year, I wanted to assist artists and to provide resources for the art world to anyone who wanted them. I also started Windlight in memory of a much beloved younger sister, who tragically passed away two years ago.

My sister was a photography student and loved the arts. Her love of the arts took her to the great and cultural city of Paris, where she was motivated and inspired by everything she saw in the city of lights.

Kandis, my sister, experienced growth in more ways than one in Paris and took her photography to new heights and levels as she perfected her craft. This growth is what has lead me to rebrand Windlight into it’s new name: Kultivate.

Cultivation is the art and science of growing things. We hope that you will continue to grow with us and Kultivate our love of all things artistic. Please note that our strong commitment to the arts will never change. We will continue to have our art shows, our galleries, and our many artistic events to bring you the resources you have grown to love and utilize. If anything we will simply expand and bring you additional resources to help you to cultivate your craft.

And one last note, you may ask why did we chose to spell cultivate with a K? The answer is simple–to honor my sister Kandis, who I know is shining down brightly on me as I continue futhering the arts in her name.

Sincerely,

Johannes1977 Resident

Windlight Raises Enough Funds to Feed 180 Children in Kenya for Feed A Smile!

13833129_10154291254676501_519203612_o

Earlier this month, Windlight created a hunt, in support of the charity, Feed A Smile. Feed A Smile raises money for children in Kenya and provides education and learning for the children. Feed A Smile is a registered charity in Germany.

When we created the hunt, we pledged to match all donations and we also pledged to make a large donation at the end. Our efforts paid off and we raised enough funds to feed 180 children in Kenya! You can see from the photo above that the children are very thankful and you can see additional photos below of the children enjoying the meal.

Putting this all into perspective, this is what  Second Life should be about, coming together to help others. We have seen it time and time again, with the recent Pulse fundraisers, to the various charity organizations in Second Life (Rock Your Rack, Creations For Parkinsons, Autism Speaks, Team Diabetes of Second Life, Homes For Our Troops), that the charitable spirit is alive and well in people.

Very special thank you to the merchants who participated:

Prism Designs, Miss Darcy, FLOOD, Bindu Gallery, % Percent Furniture and Lighting, The Edge Gallery, CKB Gallery, Kaerri, Maven Homes, Windlight Workz, and Windlight Magazine.

Please contact Brique Topaz in Second Life if you would like to support Feed A Smile.

Nude or Not…That is the Question…

The Edge Contributor, Stavaros Gracemount discusses whether or not one should use nudity in their artwork:

Nude or Not… That is the question…

There are many people with varying opinions on nudity and art. There is a fine line that is tread between the two. After attending several meetings and reading several other articles, I’m left somewhat disappointed with the lack of open-minded people within Second Life.

There are those that claim to be cutting edge, when I have discovered they are more into covering edge. What I mean by my statement is,  as some appear to be fashion forward in their thinking, they are not. They are the ones that hold back the industry from getting any new blood.
